Your GP or nurse practitioner sends the referral to us directly. You do not need to do anything with it yourself.
One of our friendly team will call you within two business days to arrange a time, and we will offer you an appointment within four weeks.
If your problem is urgent, please let our team know, and we will organise an urgent appointment.
If you don't have a referral
You do not need one to get started.
You can book a consultation with our nurse practitioner directly, either through the booking link on this site, or by calling the rooms. There is no waiting for a referral to be written, and no need to see anyone else first.
A nurse practitioner is an experienced clinician with advanced training and their own Medicare provider number. They can assess you, examine you, arrange X-rays or scans, prescribe, and provide the referral you need to see Professor Rodda.
Urgent nurse practitioner appointments are available within one week.

Do I need an appointment with Professor Rodda?
Some people just require a diagnosis and to understand their options. Nurse practitioners can arrange appropriate referrals for physiotherapy, injections, and other treatment modalities as required.
The advantage of seeing a nurse practitioner for non-operative treatment is that the appointment is more cost-effective and earlier appointments are available.

For regional, interstate or international patients
Where possible, we encourage you to come in to the rooms for your first nurse practitioner appointment, as a face-to-face consult allows a fuller assessment. For regional, interstate or overseas patients, a telehealth appointment is available instead. Where a telehealth review is arranged first, we will coordinate your investigations and appointments so that everything can be organised on the same day when you come in to see Professor Rodda.

What it costs
A consultation with our nurse practitioner in the rooms is bulk billed.
An initial consultation with Professor Rodda is $400. Medicare provides a rebate of $86 for an initial specialist consultation when you have a valid referral, leaving approximately $314 out of pocket. The rebate is only payable if you have a valid referral, one of the reasons it is worth seeing the nurse practitioner first if you do not have one. Fees correct as at August 2026.

Do I need a referral to see Professor Rodda?
A referral is needed to claim the Medicare rebate for a specialist consultation, but you do not need one to get started. You can book directly with our nurse practitioner, who can assess you and provide a referral. A referral from a nurse practitioner is valid for twelve months, the same as one from a GP.
How long will I wait for an appointment?
Once your referral reaches us, someone will call you within two business days and we will offer you an appointment within four weeks. Where the referral indicates the problem is more pressing, we aim to see you within two weeks. If you would prefer a particular day or time, you may choose to wait longer.
What is a nurse practitioner?
A nurse practitioner is a registered nurse with advanced clinical training, endorsed by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, who holds their own Medicare provider number. They can assess and diagnose, order imaging and pathology, prescribe medication, provide referrals to specialists, and manage treatment independently.
Can I have my first appointment by video?
Where possible, your first appointment with our nurse practitioner is in the rooms, as this allows a fuller assessment and is bulk billed. A video or telephone consultation is available for regional and interstate patients. Your imaging can be accessed electronically wherever it was taken, so a telehealth consultation covers the same ground for most first appointments.
Will I definitely need to see the surgeon?
No. Most people with hip or knee arthritis are managed without an operation, and our nurse practitioner can provide that care themselves, including exercise programmes, medication and injections where appropriate. A surgical appointment is arranged if and when it becomes the right conversation.
Do I need to bring my X-rays?
No. Imaging is shared electronically between practices, so we can access your scans regardless of where they were taken. You do not need to collect films or discs. If you have had imaging recently, mentioning where it was done is helpful but not essential.
