Total hip replacement for Kawana patients.

These are the only rooms Professor Rodda consults from, so every appointment is at the same address and booked on the same number. Where the operation happens.
The rooms are inside the hospital Professor Rodda operates at, so consultation, imaging, pre-admission, surgery and every review happen on the one Maroochydore campus. For a Kawana address that means one drive that you make a handful of times, to the same car park each time, rather than appointments scattered across the coast.
Getting there and getting home.
The drive north is the one piece of planning worth doing. It is a predictable run outside peak, but the morning of surgery is early and whoever drives you should treat it as a morning rather than a quick trip. Discharge is the harder direction, one to three days after a major operation, so a car with a reclining seat is worth more than a fast one.
It is also worth attending the pre-admission clinic properly rather than shortcutting it because of the drive. That appointment is where anaemia, blood sugar, blood pressure and medications get sorted out before surgery, and it is the one patients most often skip when travel is involved.
Worth counting the trips before you commit to a date. A hip replacement is a consultation, a pre-admission appointment, the admission itself, four reviews across the following year, and a short course of physiotherapy rather than the twelve to eighteen sessions a knee replacement usually needs. That makes the total number of journeys substantially smaller than for a knee.
Recovering in Kawana.
Hip replacement recovery is less protocol driven than knee replacement. You walk on the day of surgery, full weight bearing, and after an anterior approach there are usually no formal movement precautions. Most people are walking unaided somewhere between two and six weeks, and the second half of the first three months is about strength, balance and endurance rather than about range of movement.
A hip replacement needs far less formal rehabilitation than a knee, usually a short course of physiotherapy rather than a six-week programme, with most of the recovery being walking a little and often. Not all hip pain comes from the hip joint. A referral is still needed to claim the Medicare rebate on the consultation.
