What this practice does, and does not.
Professor Daevyd Rodda performs hip and knee replacement only. Primary, complex primary and revision, in both joints. There is no shoulder, spine, foot, hand or sports knee reconstruction practice here, and no general orthopaedic list.
That is worth knowing before you send someone. A high volume of the same two operations is one of the few factors consistently associated in the published literature with better outcomes in joint replacement, and it is the reason the practice is built the way it is. Revision and complex primary.
Revision hip and revision knee replacement are accepted, including for implants placed elsewhere. What is useful with the referral:
- The original operation record, and the implant make, model and sizes if you have them. The existing components determine most of the plan and finding out in theatre is the expensive way to learn it.
- Current weight-bearing radiographs, and any previous films you hold, since the comparison is often more informative than the current image alone.
- Inflammatory markers where infection is on the differential. If a periprosthetic joint infection is suspected, please call the rooms rather than referring in writing, and where possible avoid starting antibiotics before the joint has been aspirated.

Technique, plainly.
Hip replacement is most often performed through the direct anterior approach, working between muscle planes rather than detaching muscle from bone. Knee replacement is planned to the individual patient's anatomy using Medacta MyKnee patient-matched instrumentation, with robotic assistance where it suits the case, and most often performed through the subvastus, quadriceps-sparing approach.

Teaching and fellowship.
Professor Rodda holds a professorial appointment at the University of the Sunshine Coast and convenes its Graduate Certificate in Anterior Hip Replacement. He supervises an International Arthroplasty Fellowship, and is a Medacta International Reference Centre for total knee replacement in MyKnee, Sphere and kinematic alignment, sitting on both the Australia and the Medacta International AMIS Education Boards.

What does the fellowship involve?
Professor Rodda supervises an International Arthroplasty Fellowship. It is a high-volume hip and knee replacement post rather than a general orthopaedic one, which is the point of it: the fellow sees the same two operations often enough to develop real judgement about them. What is the Graduate Certificate?
A Graduate Certificate in Anterior Hip Replacement at the University of the Sunshine Coast, which Professor Rodda convenes. It is a formal qualification in the direct anterior approach rather than a short course. The university holds the enrolment details.
Will you take a revision referred from another surgeon?
Yes, including for implants he did not put in. Revision hip and revision knee replacement are both within scope. Send the original operation record and the implant details if you have them, along with current radiographs, because the existing components determine most of the plan.
